A little over a year after the formation of Mark Grand Lodge in 1856, the Province of Surrey was established in 1857 with two Lodges, Hiram No.13 and Joppa No.17, under the leadership of R.W. Bro. George Beauchamp Cole, its first Provincial Grand Master. This proved to be unsuccessful, both Lodges having failed to meet regularly. Hiram was later revived and is our oldest Lodge but Joppa was erased from the roll.

On the 2nd June 1870, at a meeting in the Town Hall at Guildford, the combined Province of Middlesex and Surrey was constituted, with R.W. Bro. Col Sir Francis Burdett as Provincial Master. This was the start of a more successful period of growth and the present Provincial tie, depicting the Guildford Town Hall Clock, marks that important event. The two Provinces seperated in 1892 when the Mark Province of Surrey, came into being. There are now 44 Mark Master Masons Lodges situated throughout Surrey, presided over by our current Provincial Grand Master R.W. Bro. Raymond Hussey (photo left) ably assisted by his Deputy V.W. Bro. Michael Barnes and his two Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, W. Bro. Arnold Long and W. Bro. Roy Leavers.

We hope you will take a little time to peruse this website and that you will find something of interest whether you are an existing Mark Master Mason or contemplating joining and becoming a member of this very rewarding and friendly Degree in Masonry.
